Best First Solo Trips from the US: 8 Places That Make It Easy.

The right first solo trip does most of the work for you. Pick a place that is walkable, English-friendly and used to independent travellers, and the whole experience feels less like a leap and more like a long weekend that happened to be abroad.

These are the destinations we recommend most often to women flying from the US for their first trip alone — chosen for easy flights, safe neighbourhoods, and the kind of days you can fill without a car or a companion.

1. Lisbon, Portugal

Direct overnight flights from the East Coast, excellent English, and one of the lowest costs in Western Europe. Lisbon is compact enough to walk, with trams for the hills and a café culture where sitting alone with a coffee is completely ordinary. Day trips to Sintra and Cascais are simple train rides.

Best for: first-timers who want Europe without the expense.

2. Dublin and the Irish coast

No language barrier, short flights, and a national habit of talking to strangers that makes solo travel almost impossible to feel lonely in. Base yourself in Dublin and take organised day trips to Howth, Glendalough or the Cliffs of Moher rather than renting a car.

Best for: anyone nervous about being alone with their own thoughts.

3. Edinburgh, Scotland

Small, dramatic and extremely walkable, with a compact old town where everything worth seeing is within about twenty minutes on foot. Trains run to the Highlands if you want a bigger day out, and the city feels safe well into the evening.

Best for: history, atmosphere and short walking distances.

4. Reykjavík and southern Iceland

Consistently ranked one of the safest countries in the world, with flights from the US that are barely longer than a domestic coast-to-coast. Small-group tours from Reykjavík cover the Golden Circle and the south coast, so you get the landscape without driving unfamiliar roads.

Best for: nature, and travellers who want maximum safety margin.

5. Kyoto, Japan

Longer to reach, but few places are easier once you arrive. Extraordinary public transport, very low crime, and a dining culture full of counter seating built for people eating alone. Signage is bilingual in tourist areas and staff are relentlessly helpful.

Best for: a bigger first trip if you already travel confidently.

6. Barcelona or Seville, Spain

Late dinners, walkable centres and a strong culture of eating small plates at the bar — the single friendliest format for a solo diner. Seville is gentler and smaller; Barcelona has more to do and needs a little more attention to pickpockets in crowds.

Best for: food, warmth and evenings that do not feel awkward.

7. Quebec City, Canada

European atmosphere with a short domestic-length flight and no jet lag to speak of. The old town is tiny, safe, and beautiful in every season. A good choice if you want to test solo travel before committing to a transatlantic trip.

Best for: a low-stakes first attempt close to home.

8. Queenstown and the South Island, New Zealand

A long flight, but the payoff is a country built around independent travellers, with an enormous small-group tour industry and English everywhere. Excellent if your idea of a milestone trip is scenery rather than cities.

Best for: a bucket-list solo trip with maximum support.

How to choose between them

Work backwards from three questions. How long can you be away? How much flying can you tolerate on either end? And do you want a city where every day is walkable, or scenery where you will join a tour? Answer those and usually two options remain — pick the one whose photos make you slightly emotional.

Whichever you choose, book five to seven nights in one place rather than hopping. Moving hotels is where solo trips get tiring, and staying put gives you the small daily rituals — the same café, the same barista — that make a city feel like yours.

We build day-by-day itineraries for destinations like these, with central stays, walkable routes and real booking links. Browse the destinations, or start with the solo travel hub if you want the checklist first.
