We're building something that scares us a little: trips where you don't find out where you're going until two weeks before you leave.

Here's the honest origin story. Over and over, we watched the same thing happen — someone has the time off approved, the money set aside, and the genuine desire to go somewhere. Then they open twelve browser tabs, compare Lisbon against Split against Mexico City for three weeks, get overwhelmed, and end up either going nowhere or booking the same place they went last year.

The problem was never budget or logistics. It was the decision.

So we're taking the decision away

A Seven Sunsets Mystery Trip works like this. You tell us the things that actually matter: your dates, how long you can go, your budget comfort level, the kind of trip you want (food, history, beaches, walkable cities, quiet), and — critically — your absolute no-gos. Nowhere you've already been. No long-haul flights. No hot climates in August. Whatever your dealbreakers are.

Then we go away and build the entire trip. A specific destination. A specific hotel we'd actually stay in. A day-by-day plan with real excursions, real restaurants, and real walking routes. Everything a normal Seven Sunsets itinerary includes — except you don't know where it is yet.

Two to four weeks before your travel dates, we send the reveal. The destination, the full plan, the booking links, all at once.

The part everyone asks about first

You book everything yourself. We want to be extremely clear about that, because "mystery trip" companies have trained people to expect a package deal with flights and hotels bundled in.

That's not what this is. We're a planning service. You pay a planning fee, we hand you a complete, researched, ready-to-execute trip, and you book the flights and the hotel with your own cards, your own points, and your own cancellation policies.

This sounds like a downside until you've been burned by a bundled package. When you book it yourself: you keep your airline status and your credit card travel protections, you use your points where they're worth the most, you're not locked into someone else's refund terms, and you're never paying a hidden markup on a hotel room you could have gotten cheaper direct.

You get the surprise without handing over control of your money.

"But what if the hotel is sold out by the time I book it?"

Fair. This is the question that kept us up at night, and here's how we're handling it.

Every reveal will ship with verified availability at the time we send it, plus two backup hotels in the same neighborhood at the same tier. Excursions get the same treatment — a primary and an alternate. And if something we recommended genuinely falls through, we rebuild that piece of the itinerary within 48 hours. No charge, no argument.

We're also deliberately revealing two to four weeks out rather than forty-eight hours out. That window is long enough that inventory is still real and flights aren't panic-priced, but short enough that you can't spend a month second-guessing the destination.

Why not just use AI for this?

You could ask ChatGPT to pick you a surprise destination in about four seconds. We've written before about what happens next: it recommends a restaurant that closed in 2019, it puts a museum on the day it's shut, and it gives you a list of the same ten attractions every other AI gives everyone else.

A surprise is only fun if it's a good surprise. The entire value of a mystery trip lives in whether the person choosing for you has taste and did the work. Generated text has neither.

Who this is genuinely for

Not everyone. If you have a specific dream destination and a mental list of exactly what you want to see there, buy a normal itinerary — you don't need us to pick for you.

This is for you if:

• You want to travel more than you actually do, and indecision is the reason.
• You've been to the obvious places and want someone to push you somewhere you'd never have chosen.
• You're planning something for a partner, a friend group, or an anniversary and want the reveal itself to be part of the gift.
• You like the idea of the surprise but not the idea of surrendering your bookings, your points, or your refunds to a tour operator.

It doesn't exist yet — and that's the point of this post

We could have built the whole thing in the dark and launched it with a press release. Instead we'd rather find out now whether this is something people actually want, from the people who'd actually buy it.
